What is Assessment?

The following is an effort to redefine 'Assessment' for my understanding and clarity. This is a sequel to the Assessment workshop we have had. I shall continue to write and elaborate on the theme.
Assessment is a continuous process of student evaluation by means of varied mechanism intended to bring about excellence in learning and teaching of the entire curriculum and enable sharing of meaningful feedback among the students and teachers and parents.

  • assessment is a pretty scary thing unless it comes from my having assessed myself rigorously on the same things before talking to my students about it. something like the story of how ramakrishna stopped the child from eating sguar.

  • Assessment is not scary when viewed in the light of the word coming from the word "assidere" which means to "sit beside". This is an essntial part of learning and assumes scary proportions only when it looms in the form of the Examination Bogey and high stakes summative assessment. Formative assessement carried out in the form of "planning for success' can be a strong driving force in facilitating learning. This was my take away from auditing Robin's sessions this time.

Amamrnathan, maybe you can link these ideas with the reference to exams in Rampal's essay and to your own stand on exams in the classroom situation in your teaching.
